Dear colleagues!
We invite you to participate in the 1st Scientific Conference in memory of Prof. Vladimir I. Zhadin (on the 125th anniversary of his birthday), which will be held from 19th to 23rd April 2021 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The host organizations of the Conference are: St. Petersburg Branch of S.I. Vavilov Institute for the History of Science and Technology of RAS and Zoological Institute of RAS.
Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences, distinguished Soviet scientist Vladimir I. (Ivanovich) Zhadin (1896–1974) made a significant contribution to the establishment and development of aquatic ecology in Russia. His works were devoted to invertebrate zoology (malacology), riverine studies, sanitary hydrobiology, biology of water reservoirs and many other topics. He developed the first theory of the biological productivity of water bodies (1940). Zhadin was a prominent specialist in the field of morphology, systematics and fauna of freshwater mollusks. He was the author of a seminal monograph “Molluscs of fresh and brackish waters of the USSR” (1952), which is still used by many European malacologists and aquatic ecologists. Beginning in 1959 Vladimir Ivanovich was Vice-President of the International Society of Theoretical and Applied Limnology (SIL). In 1965 he was awarded the SIL Einar Naumann Medal for his outstanding research on rivers, water reservoirs, and mollusks.
The scope of the Conference will include communications devoted to results of theoretical and historical research in the fields of freshwater biology and malacology as well as discussions on methodological foundations of these disciplines. The Organizing and Programme committees hope that the Conference will help to enhance the interactions between research practitioners and historians of science in order to contribute to the development of aquatic ecology.
The themes of the Conference will include:
1. History of aquatic ecology and limnology of the 20th century in the context of scientific and ideological discussions
