Scientific team organized by the St. Petersburg Association of Scientists & Scholars in cooperation with the Public Foundation “Eurasian Association of Scientists” (Uralsk, Kazakhstan) travelled in western Kazakhstan, April 2010, following the route of the 18th century expedition headed by famous naturalist Peter Simon Pallas, a member of St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences. The team consisted of two zoologists (L.J. Borkin, project head, and K.L. Milto, both herpetologists) as well as two botanists (B.K. Gannibal, steppe vegetation expert, and A.K. Sytin, an expert in the Astragalus taxonomy, and P.S. Pallas’ scientific heritage) made field observations in Uralsk and Atyrau Provinces. The materials (plants and animals) were collected in 60 steppe and desert localities of North Caspian Lowland (Fig. 3). The hydrobiological samples were taken in three salted lakes (Shalkar, Alzhan, and Inder).
